The USS Guam (LPH-9), christened after the island territory of Guam, was ordered on December 21, 1959. After almost 34 years of active service, the USS Guam was decommissioned on August 25, 1998, the same day it was stricken. The ship culminated its journey when it was sunk as target on October 16, 2001.
