USS Henrico (APA-45)
The USS Henrico (APA-45) was named after Henrico County in Virginia and was built by the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Laid down on November 12, 1942, it was launched on March 31, 1943, under the sponsorship of Mrs. W. D. Pelan and was initially christened as the SS Sea Darter. It was acquired by the navy on June 23, 1943, and was officially commissioned on November 26, 1943.
The USS Henrico underwent reclassification twice, firstly from AP-90 to APA-45 on February 1, 1943, and next from APA-45 to LPA-45 on January 1, 1969. After serving actively for over 24 years, it was decommissioned on February 14, 1968. The ship has an illustrious history of commendations including three battle stars in World War II, nine battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation in the Korean War, and a campaign star in Vietnam.
The USS Henrico was stricken on June 1, 1973, and was finally sold by MARAD on October 1, 1979, to be scrapped.
