USS Interpreter (AGR-14)
The USS Interpreter (AGR-14), originally named Dudley H. Thomas, was built by the J.A. Jones Shipyard in Panama City, Florida. This vessel was ordered as a type (EC2-S-C5) hull, with an MC hull number 2341, by the War Shipping Administration (WSA). The construction process started when the ship was laid down on January 5, 1945. Less than a month later, the ship was launched on February 8, 1945, a ceremony sponsored by Miss Carriek Cobitt.
Following its completion on February 21, 1945, the Dudley H. Thomas was operated by the Merchants & Miners Transportation Company, under the identification callsign ANIK. However, by 1947, the ship was placed in the National Defense Reserve Fleet as part of its fate. A decade later, the US Navy acquired the vessel on June 5, 1957.
