The USS John Paul Jones, named after John Paul Jones, was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The ship was laid down on January 18, 1954, and launched on May 7, 1955. The USS John Paul Jones was then commissioned on April 5, 1956, and remained active for around 26 years and 8 months until it was decommissioned on December 15, 1982.

On March 15, 1967, the USS John Paul Jones was reclassified from DD-932 to DDG-32. It was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on November 30, 1985. The ship had the motto "I have not yet begun to fight".

Ultimately, the USS John Paul Jones met its end on January 31, 2001, when it was sunk as a target.
