USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642)

The USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642) was named in honor of Kamehameha I (c. 1758–1819), the King of Hawaii from around 1795 to 1819. The order to build the submarine was placed on August 31, 1962, and it was built at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. Construction began on May 2, 1963, and the submarine was launched on January 16, 1965, with Mrs. Samuel Wilder King as its sponsor.

The USS Kamehameha was commissioned on December 10, 1965, and it remained active for approximately 36 years and 4 months until it was decommissioned on April 2, 2002. In 1992, the submarine was reclassified as an Attack Submarine (SSN-642). It was stricken on April 2, 2002. The motto of the USS Kamehameha was "Imua," a Hawaiian phrase meaning "Go forth and conquer." The submarine's nickname was the "Dead Giveaway".

Following decommission, the USS Kamehameha underwent scrapping via the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, with the process beginning in October 2002 and concluding on February 28, 2003.
