The Kitty Hawk was officially commissioned on April 29, 1961, and served for 48 years until it was decommissioned on May 12, 2009.

USS Kitty Hawk was then reclassified as CV-63 on April 29, 1973, and finally stricken on October 20, 2017. Its homeport was Puget Sound, and it used the callsign NZFF. Known by its hull number CVA-63 and its nickname "Battle Cat," the status of the USS Kitty Hawk is currently undergoing scrapping.
