The USS L. Y. Spear (AS-36) was a U.S. Navy ship named after Lawrence York Spear and built by the General Dynamics in Quincy, Massachusetts. The construction of the ship was laid down on May 5, 1966, and it was launched on September 7, 1967. The navy acquired the ship on February 11, 1970, and it was commissioned into service on February 28, 1970.
After being active for 26 years and 7 months, the USS L. Y. Spear was decommissioned on September 6, 1996. The ship was stricken, or removed from the naval register, on May 3, 1999. Eventually, the USS L. Y. Spear was sold to ESCO Marine located in Brownsville, Texas, for scrapping on July 9, 2010.
