The USS Leahy, named after William D. Leahy, was ordered on November 7, 1958, and built by the Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. Its construction began on December 3, 1959, and it was launched on July 1, 1961, sponsored by Mrs. Michael J. Mansfield. The Leahy was acquired on July 27, 1962, and commissioned on August 4, 1962. It was decommissioned on February 18, 1967, then recommissioned on May 4, 1968, and finally decommissioned again on October 1, 1993.
Overall, the USS Leahy was active for a total of 28 years and 4 months. It was reclassified as CG-16 on July 1, 1975, and stricken from the naval register on October 1, 1993. The homeports were Boston, MA (1962), Charleston, SC (1963), Norfolk, VA (1968), and San Diego, CA (1976). Its motto was "Prompta et Parata" (Prompt and Ready), and it was also known as "Sweet 16".
The Leahy's fate was to be dismantled and scrapped in Brownsville, Texas in 2005 by International Shipbreaking Limited.
