The USS Lexington was commissioned on February 17, 1943, and was decommissioned for the first time on April 23, 1947. It was recommissioned on August 15, 1955 and permanently decommissioned on November 8, 1991, making it actively in service for a total of nearly 48 years and 8 months.
USS Lexington was reclassified multiple times: first as CVA-16 on October 1, 1952, then as CVS-16 on October 1, 1962, next as CVT-16 on January 1, 1969, and finally as AVT-16 on July 1, 1978. It was stricken on November 8, 1991. The USS Lexington's callsign is NBGV and its hull number is CV-16.
Often referred to as 'The Blue Ghost,' it now serves as a museum ship at the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, located at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd., Corpus Christi, Texas.
