The USS McNair (DD-679) was named after Frederick V. McNair, Sr. Its construction was facilitated by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock in Kearny, New Jersey. The laying down of the ship took place on June 30, 1943, and it was launched a few months later on November 14, 1943. After its launch, it was officially commissioned on December 30, 1943.

USS McNair served dutifully for a period of exactly 20 years, as it was decommissioned on December 30, 1963. Eventually, it was stricken from service on December 1, 1974. The final chapter in its history came on June 10, 1976, when it was sold for scrap.
