The USS Menard (APA-201) was named after Menard County, located in both Illinois and Texas. The ship was built by Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver, Washington. It was laid down on July 12, 1944, and launched on October 11, 1944, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Clarence Gustaveson. The USS Menard was acquired and commissioned on October 31, 1944.
USS Menard was first decommissioned on June 14, 1948, then recommissioned on December 2, 1950, before its final decommissioning on October 18, 1955. During its active years, spread in two periods, the USS Menard was in service for a total of 9 years and 11 months. Later, it was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on September 1, 1961.
The USS Menard received one battle star for service in World War II and three battle stars for its service during the Korea war. Its fate was sealed in 1975 when it was scrapped.
