USS Midway (CVB-41, CVA-41, CV-41)
The USS Midway, named after the Battle of Midway, was ordered on August 1, 1942. It was built by the renowned Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The Midway was laid down on October 27, 1943 and later launched on March 20, 1945. Officially commissioned into service on September 10, 1945, it was fondly nicknamed Midway Magic. After serving actively for 46 years and 7 months, the USS Midway was finally decommissioned on April 11, 1992.
Though it went out of service in 1992, the ship wasn't stricken until March 17, 1997. Today, the USS Midway stands proud as a museum ship at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, California. It has the distinct honor of being the only carrier museum in the United States hailing from the WWII-era that is not part of the Essex class.
