USS Nautilus (SSN-571)
The USS Nautilus (SSN-571), named after Captain Nemo's "Nautilus" submarine, was awarded on August 2, 1951. It was built by the General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. The submarine was laid down on June 14, 1952, and later launched on January 21, 1954, with the sponsorship of Mamie Eisenhower, the First Lady of the United States. The USS Nautilus was completed on April 22, 1955, but had been commissioned earlier on September 30, 1954.
The submarine remained active for approximately 25 years and 5 months before being decommissioned and stricken on March 3, 1980. Presently, it serves as a museum ship.
