USS New Jersey (BB-62)

The USS New Jersey (BB-62) was named after the state of New Jersey and was ordered on July 1, 1939. It was constructed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was laid down on September 16, 1940. The ship was launched on December 7, 1942, and was sponsored by Carolyn Edison. The USS New Jersey was commissioned on May 23, 1943, and was decommissioned for the first time on June 30, 1948.

USS New Jersey was recommissioned on November 21, 1950, and then decommissioned again on August 21, 1957. It was recommissioned for a second time on April 6, 1968, and decommissioned a year later on December 17, 1969. The ship was recommissioned one last time on December 28, 1982, before finally being decommissioned on February 8, 1991. The ship saw active service for a total of approximately 21 years and 7 months.

The USS New Jersey was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on January 4, 1999. The ship's motto was "Firepower for Freedom", and it was commonly referred to as "Big J" or "Black Dragon". It was awarded 19 battle stars throughout its service and currently holds the status of a museum ship in Camden, New Jersey as of October 15, 2001.
