USS Newport News (CA-148), named after Newport News, was constructed at the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The keel was laid on November 1, 1945. The ship was later launched on March 6, 1948, under the sponsorship of Eliza S. Ferguson. Newport News was officially commissioned on January 29, 1949. The vessel remained active for 26 years and 5 months before it was decommissioned on June 27, 1975.

The USS Newport News was stricken from the naval register on July 31, 1978. Its unique identification was its callsign, NIQQ, and its hull number, CA-148. It was honored with several awards during its service, details of which can be found under "Awards." Eventually, it was scrapped on February 25, 1993.
