USS Northampton (CLC-1)
The USS Northampton (CLC-1), named after Northampton, Massachusetts, was laid down by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts, on August 31, 1944. It was launched on January 27, 1951, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Edmond J. Lampron. The Northampton was commissioned on March 7, 1953, and was active for 17 years and 1 month before being decommissioned on April 8, 1970.
Reclassified as CLC-1 on the day of its launch and later as CC-1 on April 15, 1961, the USS Northampton bore the hull number CA-125 and had the callsign NTBX. Stricken on December 1, 1977, its fate was to be scrapped later that same month. Notably, the ship's bell now resides at the Northampton Human Resources.
