The USS Perry, named after Oliver Hazard Perry, was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. Its construction started on May 14, 1945, and was launched later that year on October 25, 1945. The ship was officially commissioned into service on January 17, 1946.

The USS Perry remained active for 27 years and 5 months before being decommissioned on July 1, 1973. It was stricken on the same day and was ultimately sold for scrap on June 24, 1974.
