The USS Point Defiance, named after Point Defiance, was awarded on February 28, 1952. The ship was built by Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The laying down of the ship started on November 23, 1953, and it was launched on September 28, 1954. The USS Point Defiance was commissioned on March 31, 1955, and remained active for 28 years and 6 months until it was decommissioned on September 30, 1983.

The USS Point Defiance was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on February 24, 1992. During its service, the ship received 10 campaign stars for its role in the Vietnam War. The ship was scrapped in October 2011.
