The USS Princeton, named after the Battle of Princeton, was built by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The vessel was laid down on September 14, 1943, and went on to be launched on July 8, 1945. It was subsequently commissioned on November 18, 1945. The vessel was decommissioned initially on June 21, 1949, before being recommissioned on August 28, 1950.
The Princeton was then decommissioned for the final time on January 30, 1970, bringing its active service duration to 24 years and 5 months. Previously named the Valley Forge, it was renamed to Princeton on November 21, 1944. The ship underwent several reclassifications: to CVA-37 on October 1, 1952, to CVS-37 on January 1, 1954, and finally to LPH-5 on March 2, 1959.
The USS Princeton, identified by the callsign NHRN and the hull number CV-37, was stricken on the same day it was decommissioned for the last time, January 30, 1970. Its fate was to be scrapped in 1971.
