The ship was officially commissioned on January 15, 1944 and it served for 25 years and 11 months before being decommissioned on January 10, 1970.

USS Pritchett identification was marked by the hull number DD-561. Interestingly, the same day it was decommissioned, it was also stricken. Shortly after, on January 17, 1970, the USS Pritchett was transferred to Italy.
