USS Proteus (AS-19)
The USS Proteus (AS-19) was a vessel named after Proteus. Its construction was undertaken by Moore Dry Dock in Oakland, California. The laying down of the ship happened on September 15, 1941, followed by its launch on November 12, 1942. The vessel was formally commissioned into the fleet on January 31, 1944. After serving for a few years, it was decommissioned on September 26, 1947. However, the Proteus was recommissioned on July 8, 1960.
The USS Proteus went through another period of decommission in September 1992, only to be recommissioned in 1994 and reclassified as IX-518. However, it's final decommission came in September 1999. The ship was active for a total of around 38 years and 8 months (considering all periods of service cumulatively). On March 13, 2001, the ship was officially stricken and was eventually scrapped in 2007.
