USS Roanoke (CL-145)
The USS Roanoke, named after Roanoke, Virginia, was built by the New York Shipbuilding in Camden, New Jersey. The ship was laid down on May 15, 1945, and launched just over two years later on June 16, 1947. The Roanoke was then commissioned on April 4, 1949, and remained active for nine years and seven months until it was decommissioned on October 31, 1958. The ship was stricken from the navy list on December 1, 1970.
The USS Roanoke carried the callsign NIQE and the hull number CL-145, and its motto was "Nunc Parati Sumus," Latin for "Now we are prepared." Despite its service honors and awards, the fate of the Roanoke was to be scrapped on February 22, 1972.
