USS Sabine (AO-25)
The USS Sabine, named after the Sabine River, was built by Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland. The construction of the ship started on September 18, 1939, and it was launched on April 27, 1940, as the SS Esso Albany with Miss Ellen Klitgaard as the sponsor. It was officially purchased on September 25, 1940, and commissioned on December 5, 1940. After serving for some time, it was decommissioned on February 14, 1955.
USS Sabine was recommissioned on December 10, 1956, by MSTS and then decommissioned again on November 13, 1957. After being stricken from the record on January 14, 1959, it was recommissioned on December 14, 1961, and decommissioned for the final time on February 20, 1969. Therefore, it was active for a total of approximately 23 years and 10 months.
USS Sabine was stricken again on December 1, 1976, and eventually sold on August 1, 1983.
