The USS Scamp (SSN-588) was ordered on July 23, 1957, and built at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. The submarine was laid down on January 23, 1959, then launched on October 8, 1960. The commissioning of the USS Scamp took place on June 5, 1961. She remained active for almost 27 years until her decommissioning on April 28, 1988, the same day she was stricken.
Throughout her service, the USS Scamp was honored with three campaign stars for her Vietnam War service. In 1990, the submarine entered the Submarine Recycling Program.
