USS Sierra (AD-18)
The USS Sierra, named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range, was built by Tampa Shipyard in Tampa, Florida. Construction began with the keel being laid down on December 31, 1941. After a little over a year, the ship was launched on February 23, 1943, sponsored by Mrs. F. M. Earle.
The USS Sierra was officially commissioned into the navy on March 20, 1944. It remained active for approximately 49 years and 7 months before being decommissioned on October 15, 1993, the same day it was stricken.
Following its deactivation, the USS Sierra was sold for scrap on August 25, 1995.
