The USS Somers (DD-947, DDG-34), named after Richard Somers, was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The construction of the vessel started on March 4, 1957, and it was officially launched on May 30, 1958. The navy acquired the ship on April 1, 1959, and it was commissioned eight days later, on April 9, 1959. On March 15, 1967, it was reclassified as a guided missile destroyer.
The USS Somers remained active for just over 23 years and 8 months before it was decommissioned on November 19, 1982. The USS Somers was stricken from the naval register on April 26, 1988, and ultimately met its fate on July 22, 1998, when it was sunk as a target near Hawaii.
