USS Springfield (CL-66)
The USS Springfield (CL-66), named after the cities of Springfield in Illinois and Massachusetts, was built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts. The ship's keel was laid down on February 13, 1943, and it was launched a year later on March 9, 1944. The Springfield was commissioned into service on September 9, 1944. After serving for five years, it was decommissioned on September 30, 1949.
The USS Springfield underwent a major refit between 1957 and 1960 and was recommissioned on July 2, 1960. After almost 14 more years of active service, it was again decommissioned on May 15, 1974. In total, the Springfield was active for about 20 years and 8 months. It was officially stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on July 31, 1980, and its fate was sealed when it was sold for scrap on March 11, 1980.
