USS Sturgeon (SSN-637)

The USS Sturgeon (SSN-637) was named after the sturgeon fish. The order for its construction was placed on November 30, 1961, with the General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. The submarine's keel was laid down on August 10, 1963, and it was launched on February 26, 1966.

The USS Sturgeon was commissioned into service on March 3, 1967. The submarine remained active for 27 years and 5 months before being decommissioned on August 1, 1994, the same day it was stricken. Identified by the hull symbol SSN-637, it used the call sign NKTS.

The USS Sturgeon was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation in both 1968 and 1969, as well as a Navy Unit Commendation in 1970. Following its decommission, the submarine was scrapped via the Ship and Submarine Recycling Program on December 11, 1995.
