The USS Thetis Bay was named after Thetis Bay in Kuiu Island, Alaska and was originally ordered as a Type S4-S2-BB3 hull, MC hull 1127 on June 18, 1942. Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver, Washington was designated as the builder of the vessel. The ship's keel was laid down on December 22, 1943, and it was launched on March 16, 1944. It was subsequently commissioned on April 12, 1944, and later decommissioned on August 7, 1946.
The Thetis Bay underwent several identifications including CVE-90 (from 1944 to 1955), CVHA-1 (from 1955 to 1959), and LPH-6 (from 1959 to 1964). The vessel was recommissioned on July 20, 1956, and finally decommissioned on March 1, 1964, summing up a total active service of 17 years and 8 months. Reclassification for the ship came on July 1, 1955, and it was stricken from the naval register on March 1, 1964.
The USS Thetis Bay was awarded one battle star during its service period. Ultimately, it met its fate in 1966 when it was scrapped.
