The USS Ticonderoga (CV-14, CVA-14, CVS-14), named for the Battle of Ticonderoga, was constructed by the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The ship was laid down on February 1, 1943, and launched just over a year later on February 7, 1944. It was initially commissioned on May 8, 1944, before being decommissioned on January 9, 1947. However, the Ticonderoga was recommissioned on October 1, 1954, and remained in service until it was again decommissioned on September 1, 1973.
The USS Ticonderoga was in active service for a total of approximately 24 years and 11 months. Previously named Hancock, the ship was renamed to Ticonderoga on May 1, 1943. Further reclassifications occurred on October 1, 1952, to CVA-14, and again on October 21, 1969, to CVS-14. The ship's identification was callsign NBMU, with a hull number of CV-14. It was officially stricken from the naval register on November 16, 1973.
The Ticonderoga's fate was sealed on August 15, 1974, when it was scrapped.
