USS Towers was officially commissioned on June 6, 1961, and stayed active for roughly 29 years and 4 months, until it was decommissioned on October 1, 1990.
The USS Towers was reclassified as DDG-9 on April 23, 1957. It was identified by the callsign NISS and the hull number DD-959. After it was stricken on May 27, 1992, the USS Towers met its fate when it was sunk as a target on October 9, 2002.
