USS Wainwright (DLG-28, CG-28)
The USS Wainwright (DLG-28, CG-28) was an American naval vessel named after distinguished naval officers Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1821–1863), Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1849–1870), Richard Wainwright who served during the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and a Richard Wainwright who was a Medal of Honor recipient.
The Wainwright was awarded on May 18, 1961, with the construction carried out by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The ship was laid down on July 2, 1962, and officially launched on April 25, 1965, sponsored by Mrs. Richard W. Wainwright. The vessel was commissioned on January 8, 1966, and remained active for 27 years, 10 months before being decommissioned on November 15, 1993.
The USS Wainwright was reclassified as CG-28 on June 30, 1975, and had "Battle Tested, Battle Proven" as her motto. During the operation, the ship was based out of Charleston, South Carolina. It participated in Operation Ivory Coast.
The Wainwright's service came to an end on June 12, 2002, when she was sunk as a target near Puerto Rico.
