The USS Waldo County, named after Waldo County in Maine, was built by Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Its construction began on August 4, 1952, and it was launched on May 17, 1953. The navy ship was commissioned on September 17, 1953, and was actively in operation for an estimated 17 years and 4 months before its decommissioned on December 21, 1970. The USS Waldo County was under the service of the Military Sealift Command in non-commissioned service from May 1972 till November 1, 1973.
Initially denoted as USS LST-1163, it was renamed as USS Waldo County on July 1, 1955, and further reclassified to T-LST-1163 in May 1972. Eventually, the vessel became the USNS Waldo County in May 1972. Stricken from the Navy list on November 1, 1973, and again on April 26, 1999, from the Naval Register, the USS Waldo County was notable for its triple Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal honors in 1961, 1965, and 1966. Its fate was determined on August 7, 1984, when it was leased to Peru before being outrightly sold to Peru on April 26, 1999.
USS Waldo County served in commissioned service as USS LST-1163 from 1953–1955 and as USS Waldo County (LST-1163) from 1955–1970. Additionally, it served in non-commissioned service with the Military Sealift Command as USNS Waldo County (T-LST-1163) from 1972–1973.
