The USS Weiss was named after Carl W. Weiss and was ordered in 1942. It was built by the Defoe Shipyard in Bay City, Michigan. The construction of this vessel began with its keel being laid down on October 14, 1944, and it was launched on February 17, 1945. The ship was first commissioned on July 7, 1945, and then decommissioned on May 2, 1949. The USS Weiss was recommissioned on October 14, 1950, only to be decommissioned again on March 2, 1958.
USS Weiss was brought back into service once more on November 20, 1961, before its final decommissioning in January 1970. In total, the USS Weiss was active for over 24 years. The ship was reclassified as LPR-135 on January 1, 1969. The USS Weiss was stricken from the naval register on September 15, 1974. During its service, it earned 3 battle stars in Korea and 7 battle stars in Vietnam. Eventually, it was sold for scrap on June 24, 1976.
