USS Whiteside (AKA-90)

The USS Whiteside, named after Whiteside County, Illinois, was constructed by Moore Dry Dock in Oakland, California. Her construction began on April 22, 1944, and she was launched less than two months later on June 12, 1944. The USS Whiteside was officially commissioned on September 11, 1944, and remained active for 13 years and 4 months before she was decommissioned on January 30, 1958.

Shortly after, USS Whiteside was stricken from the Navy list on July 1, 1961. Throughout her service, the ship earned notable honours and awards, including 2 battle stars in World War II and 4 battle stars during the Korean conflict. Her final fate came in 1971, when she was sunk as a target ship.
